Menlo Park Real Estate & Neighborhood Guide
Menlo Park is a San Mateo County city of about 10 square miles that stretches from the foothills near Interstate 280 to the San Francisco Bay shoreline, with Stanford University just across San Francisquito Creek. Its neighborhoods range from early-1900s bungalows near downtown and Allied Arts to postwar ranch tracts, 1960s Sharon Heights and newer townhomes. The town grew up around a railroad station named in 1863, and that station is still in use today.

Menlo Park neighborhoods
Menlo Park took its current shape after World War II; about half of its homes are detached single-family houses, with the rest townhomes, condominiums and apartments. Most of the older single-family streets, in Allied Arts, Felton Gables and the Willows, date from the 1930s and 1940s, with a few earlier houses mixed in, while Central Menlo Park, Linfield Oaks, Suburban Park and Sharon Heights are mostly late-1940s-to-1960s ranch-era tracts.
Downtown Menlo Park
The blocks between El Camino Real, Johnson Street and Arbor Road, from Valparaiso Avenue to Middle Avenue: mostly apartments and condominiums, with two small pockets of 1930s and 1940s houses, near the Santa Cruz Avenue shops and the 1867 Caltrain depot.
Allied Arts / Stanford Park
Bounded by Middle Avenue, San Francisquito Creek, Arbor Road and El Camino Real, on streets named for colleges, such as Yale Road and Cambridge Avenue. Mostly 1930s and 1940s cottages, with a few older houses and many rebuilds, around the Allied Arts Guild, home to artists' studios since 1929.
Central Menlo Park
About 1,800 houses on mostly 10,000-square-foot lots between Valparaiso Avenue and San Francisquito Creek, from downtown west to the West Menlo Park line: postwar ranch houses alongside newer rebuilds.
Linfield Oaks
West of Middlefield Road to Alma Street, between San Francisquito Creek and Ravenswood Avenue, mostly built in the mid-1950s with ranch homes and two-story apartments, plus newer enclaves such as Morgan Lane. The civic center, library and Burgess Park are inside the neighborhood.
The Willows
East Menlo Park between Middlefield Road, Willow Road and San Francisquito Creek, out to the East Palo Alto line near U.S. 101: mostly 1940s single-story homes, a few early-1900s houses and a short row of shops on Menalto Avenue.
Felton Gables
About 115 homes on curving streets off Encinal Avenue, between the Caltrain tracks and Atherton's Holbrook-Palmer Park, built mostly from 1936 to 1949 on the former Felton family estate.
Park Forest
About 80 townhouses built from 1964 to the late 1970s on Stone Pine Lane, Forest Lane and Buckthorn Way, between El Camino Real and the Caltrain tracks, with private parks and pools run by homeowners associations.
Suburban Park / Lorelei Manor / Flood Triangle
Three postwar tracts in the wedge between Bay Road and U.S. 101, from Marsh Road to Willow Road, around 21-acre Flood County Park: mostly single-story homes built from 1946 to 1956.
Belle Haven
The neighborhood east of U.S. 101, between Willow Road and the Dumbarton rail line, first subdivided in the 1930s and filled in mostly with one-story houses in the 1940s and 1950s, next to the Bayfront district and about a mile from Bedwell Bayfront Park.
Sharon Heights
The city's southwestern corner, from I-280 and Sand Hill Road to Altschul Avenue, subdivided in the 1950s and 1960s around the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club (1962). Ranch houses and newer rebuilds plus several large multi-unit complexes; it is inside the city even though unincorporated West Menlo Park nearly separates it.
West Menlo Park (unincorporated)
An unincorporated San Mateo County area along Alameda de las Pulgas between Atherton, Sharon Heights and Sand Hill Road, with Menlo Park mailing addresses, county permits and a small business district around Avy Avenue.
Menlo Oaks (unincorporated)
An unincorporated pocket of about 300 homes surrounded by Menlo Park and Atherton, with narrow roads and no sidewalks, home to Peninsula School in the 1882 Italianate Coleman Mansion.

Four elementary districts overlap Menlo Park and none follows the city limit, so next-door neighbors can be in different districts. School lines don't follow city lines or ZIP codes, so confirm any address with the district before you buy. Start with our Silicon Valley schools guide.
